Metal roofing is said to last for a longer duration of time over the years but if it isn’t treated properly it can gather dust or rust rather quickly given extreme exterior weather conditions.
Similarly the panels of metal roofing are likely to crack or get dislodged due to high winds creating a number of problems for home owners.
To replace metal panels measure the accurate size of the damaged metal panel after removing it from the trim and cut out a replacement using tin snips. Cover the long edges of the new piece with 2-inch butyl tape and slide it back into the trim on the roof. Secure with screws along the length of the metal panel.
Finally spread a layer of roof coating along the edges of the new panels and let dry. The roof coating acts as a sealant against the elements. Repair other damaged roof panels in the same way.
Inadequate airflow under metal roof panels can result in leakages and other problems such as imbalanced heating and cooling of your home. The best way to counter balance any of the negatives a metal roof can cause is to create a proper insulation system that discourages condensation under the metal roof.
Polyurethane foam kits are the perfect solution for insulating interior or exterior parts of your home. They come in spray form and must be sprayed according to the user guide on the designated spots under roofing or a false ceiling whatever the case may be.
Measure your roof area accurately to get the correct number of polyurethane foam kits needed to complete the job. Wearing safety gears proceed to mix and prepare the spray as per the directions on the label.
Starting from the interior edge where the roof meets the wall spray the foam in systematic rows until you have covered the whole roof.
Rubber roofs are comparatively easier to install than metal or shingle roofs. They can even be used on sloping roofs that have skylights. Measure your roof including the sky light to determine exact square footage. Drape both the rubber roofing sheets carefully all over the roof. Measure the skylight area and mark the same onto the spot of roofing that sits directly above it.
Cut out with a utility knife and leave the piece aside, remove the second layer of rubber roofing. Lifting the first layer from one end expose significant areas of the roof to work on and begin applying roof cement. Press down on the cement and leave to dry.
Apply glue to the surface and roll the second sheet over it pressing out air bubbles to get a smooth finish. Apply a sealant around the skylight to adhere the roofing. Ensure that all layers are stuck firmly to the roof around the skylight area.
Instructions
1. The length and width of the roof should be measured to calculate how much sheet metal will be needed.
2. The roof should be cleared before installing the sheet metal.
3. The No. 15 felt underlayment should be rolled across the roof starting at the bottom corner. Nails should be hammered around the perimeter from the inside till the entire roof has been covered. Nails should be inserted all the way around the felt to secure it to the sheathing underneath.
4. The metal edging trim should be run around the outside perimeter of the roof and a roofing nail should be inserted every six inches around the perimeter to cover the roof with the trim.
5. The first piece of sheet metal should be allowed two inches of overhang and should be hammered in place with metal roofing nails around the entire piece and the second piece should be lined to overlap.
Instructions
1. A basic roof shape suitable for your project should be selected from home design books.
2. Skylights or dormer windows should be designed on the roof exterior to allow natural light into the rooms. Pre-built roof trusses can be used over a large interior space, so that no support framing is needed in the middle of the floor space.
3. The details of overhangs should be sketched to upscale the look of a roof. Generous overhangs should be designed for protecting the exterior facade of a home and for preventing rain water penetrating into walls.
4. A roof should be designed keeping in mind that it does not appear too heavy for a one-story house or too small for a two-story house having large windows.
5. A metal roof should be selected for a home in a densely-wooded area for keeping down moss and mold on the roof.
